Abstract

n association between hyperparathyroidism and pancreatites has been well accepted and widly published for several decades. This tenet was based on clinical reports that as many as
7 to 12% of patients with hyperparathyrodism associated pancreatits. However, more recently
series of patients with hyperparthyroidism have failed to confirm such a high frequent
coexistent pancreatitis. Also placing doubt on the casual ationship between
hyperparathyroidism and pancreatitis is the fact a satisfactory mechanism for combination has
never been fully elucidated.
A 77 year old male was hospitalized because of recurrent severe abdominal pain. An abdominal ultrasonogram showed acute pancretitis and blood tests showed his serum calcium
level to be high. He underwent surgery of the parathyroid tumor was removed. Six months
after his operation there has been no recurrence abdominal pain and his calcium level is
within the nomal range. We report a case herein and also discuss the possible cause and
effect relationship between primary hyperparathyroidism and pancreatitis.
